ShadowBox Studio and Stone Photography (www.stonephotography.ca) have been collaborating with model and promotional shoots (photo samples to come - Judi's eye for fashion is fabulous!) I have been applying makeup on the girls, assisting with hair and wardrobe and Judi takes the photos while the girls do their thing.

Judi and I both needed some new photos taken for our websites and promotional material. We had a great time at Judi's studio!

A Bit of Old School

I had the opportunity recently to get out and take some photos with my good ol' film SLR. Yup folks, an old schooler. I was born and raised learning about photography the old fashioned way - honestly, it was when I first fell in love with photography, and I am a sentimental soul.

The immediate nature of digital is fantastic and one of my favorite features of modern photography, but there's more forthought and careful execution of film photography - you just can't look at the little screen and see how you did. :-)

My passion for statues got some juice the other day and got to take some photos of my two favorites in town here. Such majestic beauty!

Every Tuesday evening I participate in a meditation class, with Jeannine Sanderson. She has just finished her very first book and was putting together a cover for her new 'baby'. She just needed an artist's touch. :-) Since my roots are in Graphic Design and Jeannine has been so helpful with her classes, I just had to lend a hand.

Jeannine already had a very pretty photo a friend of hers took for her, but just needed some tweaking to help it out a little.

A few graphic elements, a sepia tone on the photo, a nice font, and we have the finished piece.

Congratulations on completing this milestone Jeannine! What an amazing accomplishment!!

Charlotte in the Studio

Ah, what better to do than to hit the studio during the winter. Fan-tas-tic! I do not shy away from flash photography - even though natural light is always the number one choice for most of us, I really enjoy the challenge using indoor lights and flashes. I have the chance to get truly creative and draw out some dramatic results.

Here are some samples from my ongoing headshot series I've been working on for the last 6 weeks. You can see where I've gotten creative - with my lighting, and makeup!

These sessions with Charlotte we were able to manage 5 makeup looks in one evening. Each being a bit more dramatic/different than the next, until we reached uber-glam! Rowr!

Every cloud...

has a silver lining? Well, every snowbank glitters in the sunlight!! Always has been my favourite part of winter, regardless of how much snow there is! Glam on, winter, glam on!!

This, of course, only lasts while it's poufy, light stuff. But I enjoyed it. I kept Paul company, snapping away for a bit while he shoveled, then it was inside for a fresh pot of coffee and sausage rounds.

Admittedly, however, I am VERY ready for spring!

I LOVE clip-outs! I encourage brides and clients to bring their favorite looks from magazines along with them to their trials or consultations. As an artist I really like to have different inspirations and looks to play with. Caroline brought this clip-out with her on Saturday of a lovely bridal look with a warm tungsten glow and ambient flash:

Yesterday I had a wonderful time at the Femme Fatale shoot with C'est Chic Photography. It was a fun-filled day packed with feathers, lingerie and the word 'HOT' tossed in a few dozen times! I can't wait to share Denise's photos with everyone - the previews were looking great. Thanks to all of our gorgeous ladies who really shone with the 'femme fatale'! I will be posting photos as soon as they get in.

Introducing Twister

No, it's not her real name, but everyone calls her Twister - even her mom! We braved the elements last night for a little photoshoot in the studio. Twister is delightfully easy going and wonderfully photogenic - she did great! I look forward to another session together soon, to continue to build her modeling portfolio. As usual, I applied the makeup.

Paul and I enjoyed a lovely romantic dinner at the Keg and a nice relaxing evening together for Valentine's Day. Both of us have been so very, very busy lately that we haven't had much time together, so this was a very special time for us. Paul marked the occasion with a gorgeous bouquet of red roses. They are opening so nicely right now, I got 'specially mushy this afternoon and took some photos of my roses and my rings. I am so lucky to have Paul in my life - he's the best.

I had the privilege of meeting Tanya on the Trash the Dress marathon last Fall. Four brides in one afternoon - what a blast! These ladies were super. Tanya sent me a lovely email with a thank you and a wonderful compliment... "your ability to turn an average girl like myself into a superstar." Honestly, when I have beautiful women to work with, it really makes my job quite easy!

While I wait for some more bride photos, I thought I'd share my model/fashion adventures with you. I've always loved fashion, so we be like two peas in a pod!! There's so much energy and enthusiasm around fashion - it's rather contagious. Can't wait for more!!

I have had the opportunity to do makeup and then have a photosession with two lovely ladies. A sheer pleasure to work with! I can see them both doing well and I hope their photos are a compliment to their portfolios. This is the joy of owning and operating a camera, however it does make for a rather long session! The next two photos I took of these models.

This was a 'mask' style makeup we had done for Jahmela - just for something exotic. She really pulls it off!

Section b)
Trash the Dress! This sensation is sweeping the area! Everyone is all a-buzz about trash the dress. Personally, I feel the contrast of a gorgeous bridal gown against nature is just awesome to behold. I love it. I had the opportunity to do Linda's hair and makeup for her. This was a first-time for hair for me! The hair-bug, she bit. ;-)

I'm so happy for Bryan - this last photo was selected to appear on the front of a local bridal magazine in the Niagara region! Way to go Bryan! I'm not surprised, to be honest - you're one talented photographer.

Two Months Later...

Wow! Over two months since I've posted? Woah. I gotta get crackin' and update!! There has been SO MUCH over the past while....

...oh, and did I mention I work full time too?? Yah. ;-)

Whirlwind Weekend!

This weekend was ideal for me – dabbling in each of my passions – makeup, photography and fashion!! It was an awesome experience; complimented with learning curves at each.

Saturday morning.

Saturday morning was with a bride and her mom – for a makeup application for her wedding at 2 p.m. The sun was intense that day, so I hope that the bride blotted often with the blotting paper I included in her emergency kit. It’s really difficult with naturally shiny/oily skin, so I habitually prime with Arbonne’s Personalizer Powder. Works like a charm for a naturally matte finish, and when makeup is finished off with a translucent powder, it really kicks the shine to the curb! I will post the pro photos when they come in. But here's a quick little 'point and shoot' snapshot...

Saturday afternoon.

In the afternoon I was off to St. Mary’s to assist photography at a wedding. As I mentioned before, the sun was intense that day, and quite hot. This was a lovely wedding with around 60 people in attendance. It’s so different being behind the camera instead of in front, but something I love about assisting is taking candids! What’s wonderful about taking candid photos is that I am in the shadows and able to take lovely photos of people at their natural best.

Sunday.

I have always loved fashion and beauty, and like a lot of twentysomethings around 10 years ago I made a 'go' at becoming a plus-sized model. I’ve got the height, but that’s about it. The modeling chapter has closed, but the chapter of working in the industry has just opened. Upon embarking on this journey of utilizing my art and fulfilling my dream, I signed onto a website called “ModelMayhem”. I answered a casting call and was included in a fantastic mock bridal photoshoot. I was not the primary makeup artist for the shoot, but was given the opportunity to work on a ‘model’ and the men.

I was not sure what to expect this time, since back in my ‘plus-sized’ model days – there wasn’t much respect to be had for the ‘big girls’. But to my surprise and delight everyone on Sunday was wonderful to work with – professional and very courteous! James R. Watson, the photographer, is an awesome talent. His photos are a welcome addition to my portfolio. The blue background photos are from my 'point n' shoot', and the others are James' thumbnails. When the pro shots are released, they will be posted!

Rush the Blush!

I wish to share with you a trial from last weekend, August 5th. It was a lovely, bright day, so it made application a snap, and without my lamp & umbrella. Last week's participant has pretty eyes, a bright smile and a nice olive complexion. She expressed to me, with a bit of a sigh, how difficult is has been with other makeup artists to match the foundation to her skin. I think I got pretty close! (You will see by the before and after pictures how the light can change so much in an hour and a half.) Next time with this pretty participant I will use my new blush product from Arbonne. Currently having limited supply of subtle colours of blush has left me improvising from time to time with combinations. I enjoy having a broader selection, which is coming from Arbonne this week! I am excited.

I am looking forward to 'making up' 4 Bridesmaids, the Bride and the Bride's Mom on September 28th!
